New Delhi: The World Health Organization said on Sunday that according to early data, the Omicron coronavirus variant is more easily spread than the Delta strain, reducing the effectiveness of the vaccine, but causing milder symptoms.
The Delta variant, first discovered in India earlier this year, is the culprit for most of the world's coronavirus infections.
However, South Africa discovered a large number of Omicron mutations last month, prompting countries around the world to impose travel bans on southern African countries and re-impose domestic restrictions to slow its spread.
WHO stated that as of December 9, Omicron had spread to 63 countries. In South Africa, Delta is not so popular. In the United Kingdom, Delta is the main strain and spreads faster.
