IN A BIG JUMP, INDIA HAS 2.47 MILLION NEW COVID CASES, WITH A 13 PERCENT INCREASE IN POSITIVITY.
India
today recorded 2.47 lakh coronavirus cases, the greatest single-day increase in
the ongoing outbreak. The total number of cases in the country now stands at
3.63 crore, with 5,488 Omicron variant cases reported across 28 states and union
territories.
The
active cases account for 3.08 percent of all infections, while the COVID-19
recovery rate in the United States has dropped to 95.59 percent. According to
data released this morning by the Health Ministry, the active COVID-19 caseload
has increased by 84,825 cases in just 24 hours.
The
weekly positivity rate was 10.80 percent, while the daily positivity rate was
13.11 percent. According to the ministry, the total number of doses provided in
the country as part of the nationwide vaccination push has surpassed 154.61
crore.
According
to the Health Ministry, 380 people have died as a result of Covid in the last
24 hours. This includes 199 deaths in Kerala in recent months, which were added
based on pending appeals following the Supreme Court's recent directions.
Maharashtra,
one of the worst-affected states by the Covid pandemic, reported 46,723 new
COVID-19 cases, up more than 27% from the day before, bringing the total to
more than 70,000. According to the state health service, the new cases included
86 infections of the highly dangerous Omicron strain, bringing the total number
of cases in the state to 1,367.
There
were 27,561 new Covid cases recorded in Delhi today, up 29% from the previous
24 hours and the largest in a single day since April. The rate of optimism has
risen to 26%, the highest level in seven months.
Kerala's
new cases surpassed 10,000 for the first time in three months on Wednesday,
with the state reporting 12,742 infections. Virus-related deaths were also
recorded in 23 cases during this time period. As of yet, the cases are mostly
in Delta, according to the State Health Minister.
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi will meet with chief ministers today to discuss the
Covid crisis, according to PTI, which cited sources. Within a week, the prime
minister will have his second review meeting. PM Modi had called on the
government to ensure appropriate health infrastructure at the district level
and to speed up the adolescent immunisation programme in mission mode on
Sunday.
According
to the Centre, lateral flow tests, which include rapid-antigen and home-antigen
testing, can detect Covid from the third to the eighth day after virus contact,
while the RT-PCR test can diagnose the infection for up to 20 days. Dr Balram
Bhargava, Director-General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),
declared during a news conference that on the first day, all tests will be
negative.
Omicron
is not a common cold, according to the government's senior Covid adviser VK
Paul, who spoke out a day after the country's top epidemiologist described
Omicron infections as mild as a cold and predicted that everyone would catch
it.
Due
to the fast-spreading Omicron form, which was originally found in Botswana and
South Africa, Covid cases have been on the rise since late last year. According
to an AFP assessment based on official numbers, the total number of Covid-19
cases documented worldwide since the outbreak began surpassed 300 million on
Friday.
