KERALA: ASKED FOR BILL, SWEDISH TRAVELER EMPTIES ALCOHOL BOTTLES IN KOVALAM; COP SUSPENDED


Thiruvananthapuram: Action has been taken against the police for insulting a foreigner who bought liquor from a government bevco outlet in Kovalam on New Year's. Grade SI TK Shaji of Kovalam station has been suspended. Stephen Asberg, a Swedish man who has been running a homestay for four years, was under block by police on Friday near Suicide Point.

State Tourism Minister P A Muhammed Riyas made strongly criticise for the police move, sub-inspector Shaji, who steer the police group, was put under suspension. "Police activity was hapless when the public authority is attempting to attract the more visitors to the state after the pandemic. It  is contradictory with the government policy. The leisure travel industry would face to crisis from such police activity. The issue has been brought to the attention of the chief minister,'' he said.

The steps against the sub-inspector came later Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan looked for a report from DGP Anil Kant on the issue. As per reports, Steven had bought three bottles of alcohol – according to the rules in Kerala, an individual can carry three liters of alcohol sold in the state.

While getting back from the bevco outlet on his scooter, Steven was waved to by a police group, which has been investigating vehicles as a part of an special drive on New Year's eve. An investigation of the scooter prompted anotised of three bottles of alcohol from Steven's vehicle.

A cop asked Steven for the buyed bill, which he was unable to present as the bevco had not given him the slip. At the point when the visitor mentioned that he be permitted to get back to the alcohol outlet and get the bill, the police requested that he forsake the bottles. Rather than leaving the plastic containers, Steven, in any case, chose to empty the alcohol  bottles.
