STRIKE 2: OBC LEADER DARA SINGH CHAUHAN RESIGNS AS UP MINISTER
New
Delhi, India: Dara Singh Chauhan, a second minister in Yogi Adityanath's Uttar
Pradesh cabinet, has resigned, adding to a flurry of resignations that began
with Swami Prasad Maurya's surprise resignation yesterday. This is the second
OBC (Other Backward Class) leader to leave Yogi's camp immediately before the
upcoming Uttar Pradesh election.
Mr
Chauhan, a member of the Adityanath government's environment and forests
ministry, joined the BJP in 2015 after years with the Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP). After winning the 2017 assembly election, he was appointed as the head
of the BJP's OBC Morcha, a lucrative position, and then as a minister. Mr
Chauhan was a Lok Sabha MP from 2009 to 2014 and a Rajya Sabha MP in the late
1990s when he was a member of the BSP.
"It's
not possible for me to say something one day and then resign the next. I hoped
that sooner or later, my voice would be heard. But when it became clear that no
one was prepared to listen to me, I had no choice but to resign "When
asked why he was departing so close to the polls, Mr Chauhan told NDTV.
Two
ministers and four MLAs have already abandoned the BJP and are expected to join
Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party as the party seeks re-election in India's most
politically important state.
Mr
Chauhan wrote in his resignation letter, "I worked with dedication but I
am resigning as I am hurt by this government's oppressive attitude toward the
backward, deprived sections, Dalits, farmers, and unemployed youth, and the
neglect of quota for the backward and Dalits," in nearly identical
language to Swami Prasad Maurya.
Chief
Minister Yogi Adityanath's deputy, Keshav Prasad Maurya, responded immediately
with a tweet encouraging Mr Chauhan to reconsider his decision.
"It
is very distressing whenever a family member strays. I can only implore the
renowned leaders who are going to avoid boarding a sinking ship since it will
be their loss. Dara Singh, big brother, please reconsider your decision "Keshav
Maurya penned the article.
He
had made a similar appeal to Swami Prasad Maurya, who quit yesterday, causing a
slew of OBC or backward caste leaders to flee the BJP.
The
exits have blown a hole in the BJP's OBC leadership ahead of an election in
which Akhilesh Yadav is the party's primary adversary and backward votes are
crucial.
Mr
Chauhan, like five others before him, is likely to follow the BSP-BJP-Samajwadi
Party path.
