THE AUTHOR OF THE SULLI DEALS APP HAS BEEN APPREHENDED IN INDORE, ACCORDING TO DELHI POLICE.
On
Sunday, the Delhi Police detained a 25-year-old Indore man for reportedly
building a web-based app in July of last year that had doctored images and
offensive comments directed towards Muslim women.
"We
detained Aumkareshwar Thakur from Indore for his role in the Sulli Deals
case," DCP (Cyber Cell) KPS Malhotra stated. During questioning, he
revealed that in January 2020, he joined a trad group (Tradmahasabha) on
Twitter with the intention of defaming and trolling Muslim women. He then used
GitHub to create code for the Sulli Deals. All of the members of the group had
access to the app. On his Twitter account, he revealed the app's details. Other
members of the group published the images of the Muslim women."
In
July 2021, the app targeted 50-80 Muslim women and was quickly taken down by
GitHub after many women filed complaints with the Delhi and Noida police
stating that the app's authors were exploiting their images to "sell"
them online.
Thakur
(25) was seized by Indore police on Saturday. Thakur was a BCA student at
Indore's IPS Academy. The arrest comes only days after a 21-year-old Assamese
man, Niraj Bishnoi, was arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly launching a
similar software on GitHub in December of last year. More than 100 Muslim
women's images were posted on the app, along with offensive remarks.
Thakur
was apprehended and probed by the Cyber Cell in Delhi.
"I
was in Nagda on an official tour when two officers disguised in civil clothing
came to my house," Aumkareshwar's father, Akhilesh Kumar Thakur, said
about the arrest. They sought out Aumkareshwar and invited him to accompany
them, along with his phone and laptop. After that, he was sent to Delhi on a 7
p.m. flight." "When I got home, my younger son told me there was
something about an application," he continued. Until now, I hadn't been
able to communicate with my son. He assured me that he was unharmed. I'm
convinced he's being set up in this case."
"These
youngsters are only foot troops," Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh stated,
implying that there were larger people involved. The bigger sharks are
poisoning their minds and bribing them. "Reel in the Big One."
"My
father was away when they came to arrest my brother," Mandleshwar Thakur,
Aumkareshwar's sibling, told The Indian Express. He was self-assured and told
the cops that he was not involved and had been wrongfully accused. He has good
reason to engage in such behaviour. We are a well-established family. My father
works for a private corporation, and both my sister and I work as well.
Mandleshwar
is employed with a global corporation in the IT industry.
He
went on to say that for the past few years, he and his brother had no social
media presence at all. "He was usually very busy with work, and in the
previous four years he had taken on a lot of freelance assignments as
well." Since Aumkareshwar's arrest, my mother hasn't eaten anything."
