THE BAN ON POLITICAL RALLIES HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL JANUARY 22ND DUE OF THE PANDEMIC
New Delhi, India: The prohibition on rallies and roadshows in five states before of elections, which was imposed last week after Covid cases rose significantly, has been extended till January 22, according to the Election Commission.
Indoor political gatherings will be permitted up to 300 persons, or 50% of the hall's capacity, or the state's disaster management authority's limit. Political parties are responsible for enforcing laws such as social separation and the wearing of face masks.
The top polling organisation announced on January 8 that rallies, roadshows, and other types of political gatherings, including indoors and outdoors, would be prohibited until January 15 (today), after which the ruling will be reconsidered.
The Election Commission had a series of sessions today, beginning at 11 a.m. with the Union Health Secretary, continuing at noon with the Chief and Health Secretaries of all poll-bound states, and concluding at 1 p.m. with the Chief Election Officers.
The directive prohibiting rallies and roadshows was part of a 16-point plan to ensure the safe conduct of elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur.
The staging of nukkad sabhas, or roadside gatherings, and limiting the number of persons for door-to-door canvassing were among the 'no-nos' on that list.
However, as enormous crowds gathered for the induction of two ex-BJP ministers, Swami Prasad Maurya and Dharam Singh Saini, as well as six other MLAs, Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party came under the poll body's scrutiny yesterday.
Hundreds of people gathered in videos, the bulk of them wore no masks and did not maintain social distance.
UP Police have filed a FIR against 2,500 people, according to PTI. "Prima facie, there was a violation... investigations are continuing," a senior Lucknow district official said. The party office received a notice.
"I ask to (everyone) to follow Covid protocols when they come to (our) office," Mr Yadav said today.
Elections are being held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur, and Uttarakhand despite an alarming increase of Covid cases across the country, including in several of the poll-bound regions.
