THE GUWAHATI-BIKANER EXPRESS DERAILS IN BENGAL, KILLING AT LEAST THREE PEOPLE AND INJURING 20 MORE.

 

West Bengal's Jalpaiguri is a city in the state of West Bengal. After a train accident in North Bengal,  disturbing images of many passengers trapped in the debris have surfaced. Today, the Guwahati-Bikaner Express train derailed in Maynaguri in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district. According to Moumita Godala Basu, District Magistrate of Jalpaiguri, at least three persons have been killed and more than 20 have been injured.

According to sources, the injured were carried to a government hospital in Moynaguri first, and the seriously injured were then transferred to the Jalpaiguri district hospital.

According to Railway sources, several passengers are believed to be trapped inside the wrecked coaches, and gas cutters are being used to cut apart the mangled cars.

In the aftermath of the accident, a High-Level Commissioner Railway Safety investigation has been ordered. The Chairperson of the Railway Board and the Director General (Safety) of the Railway Board are flying from Delhi to the accident scene.

5 lakh for death, 1 lakh for grave damage, and 25,000 for "minor injuries" has been announced as compensation.

People are being rescued from the debris of many damaged train cars lying sideways close to the elevated train lines, according to images from the disaster site. Locals and other passengers can be seen helping with relief and rescue operations, with police on the scene. New Jalpaiguri and New Alipurduar rescue trains have been dispatched to the scene.

At around 5 p.m., the train derailed between the New Domohani and New Maynaguri railway stations. Officials from the railway and the district administration are assisting with rescue and relief efforts.

According to northeast Frontier Railway sources, at least five carriages of the train were derailed, and the number could rise. One of the coaches has sunk.

The train had departed Bikaner junction the day before and was due to arrive in Guwahati this evening.
