WEEKS BEFORE THE POLLS, THE PUNJAB CHIEF MINISTER'S NEPHEW WAS RAIDED IN A MINING CASE

The Enforcement Directorate searched Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi's nephew and several others today in connection with illegal sand mining, just weeks before state elections.

Early this morning, Mr Channi's nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey's home and ten other locations in Punjab were searched.

Officials stated the Enforcement Directorate has filed a money laundering case and is probing many people with political ties.

The raids take place during a period of intensive campaigning in Punjab, which goes to the polls on February 20. On March 10th, the results will be announced.

One of the major talking themes in the Punjab campaign has been illegal sand mining. Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has accused the ruling Congress of having ties to the drug trade.

Amarinder Singh, who left the Congress after being fired as Chief Minister in September, claims that all of the party's MLAs are involved in the illegal sand trade.

Last month, he remarked, "If I start telling names, I'll have to start from the beginning."

Mr Singh also told reporters that he told Congress President Sonia Gandhi about the MLAs involved.
