AFTER OUTRAGE OVER POSTS ON KASHMIR, KFC APOLOGISES AND PIZZA HUT CLARIFIES.
New
Delhi, India: KFC, the fast-food restaurant brand, apologised on Monday after
an outcry on social media over a post from its Pakistan-based branch supporting
separatists in Kashmir.
After
experiencing outrage after an Instagram post on Kashmir by its official handle
in Pakistan, another QSR brand, Pizza Hut, issued a statement claiming it
"does not condone, endorse, or agree with the sentiments of a post
circulating in social media."
Yum!
Brands, which also owns iconic fast-food chain Taco Bell, owns both KFC and
Pizza Hut.
"We
sincerely regret a post that appeared on various KFC social media channels
outside of the United States. We honour and appreciate India, and we stay
committed in our promise to proudly serve all Indians "according to a
tweet on the official Twitter account of KFC India
In
a statement, Pizza Hut said: "It does not endorse, promote, or agree with
the contents of a social media post. We remain steadfast in our determination
to proudly serve all of our brothers and sisters."
KFC's
verified account had previously shown support for separatists in Kashmir in a
social media post, writing, "Kashmir belongs to Kashmiris."
Similarly,
an Instagram post from 'Pizzahutpak's verified account stated, "We are
here to support you. Today is the International Day of Solidarity for
Kashmir."
After
the hashtags #BoycottKFC and #BoycottPizzaHut became trending on Twitter, both
social media posts were removed.
The
incident comes after Hyundai Motors received a similar criticism on social
media on Sunday after a Pakistani dealer tweeted a message supporting rebels in
Kashmir.
A
Twitter account belonging to a Hyundai dealer in Pakistan,
@hyundaiPakistanOfficial, had posted a message in support of Kashmir Solidarity
Day, calling it a "fight for freedom."
Following
the tweet, the hashtag #BoycottHyundai trended in India, with numerous users
urging others not to buy Hyundai items in the nation.
Hyundai
Motors India issued a social media message on Sunday emphasising its commitment
to the Indian market.
In
June 1995, KFC made its first foray into the Indian market by launching a
restaurant in Bengaluru.
Through
its franchise partners, which include RJ Corp-owned Devyani International and
