DEEP SIDHU, AN ACTOR CHARGED WITH REPUBLIC-DAY VIOLENCE, WAS KILLED IN A ROAD ACCIDENT
Deep
Sidhu, a Punjabi actor-turned-activist accused of being a key conspirator in
the Red Fort riots on Republic Day last year, died when his car collided with a
truck on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal expressway in Haryana's Sonipat district on
Tuesday evening, February 15, police said. When the incident occurred near
Pipli toll plaza in Kharkhoda, the 37-year-old actor was claimed to be
travelling from Delhi to Punjab.
The
tragedy occurred around 25 kilometres from the Singhu border, which was the
epicentre of farmers' protests against farm restrictions last year. Inspector
Jaspal Singh of the Kharkhoda police station said, "Deep Sidhu perished as
a result of the accident. His female companion was brought to the hospital,
where her condition was stabilised." He added an inquiry was underway to
ascertain the exact reason of the tragedy.
Sidhu
suffered critical brain injuries in the accident, according to the police.
After crashing into the halted truck, the white SUV was extensively damaged on
the driver's side, according to television footage. Senior Sonipat police
officers have arrived at the accident scene.
At
the Delhi boundaries, Sidhu took part in the farmers' demonstration against the
Union government's three farm legislation. On Republic Day, 2021, he was
arrested in connection with the Red Fort riots during a farmers' tractor parade
protesting the Union government's three agriculture policies. He spent more
than two months in jail before being freed on bond. The Punjab Chief Minister
and a number of political heavyweights have expressed their sorrow over the
event.
Charanjit
Singh Channi, the Chief Minister of Punjab, said on Twitter, "Deeply
saddened by the news of acclaimed actor and social activist Deep Sidhu's
untimely death. My condolences and prayers go out to the bereaved family and
fans." Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, said
that the actor and campaigner Sidhu's premature demise shocked his fans and the
whole film industry. "Many people looked up to the Muktsar
lawyer-turned-artist. Condolences to his family and prayers for the soul that
has passed away "Badal sent out a tweet.
Bhagwant
Mann, the AAP's Punjab unit president and a Sangrur MP, too expressed sorrow
over Sidhu's demise. The actor, who was born in Punjab's Muktsar region, was
said to be present at the Red Fort when a religious flag and a farmer flag were
placed on the ancient monument's flagpole.
After
widespread condemnation, Sidhu defended the protesters' actions, claiming that
they did not remove the national flag and instead erected the 'Nishan Sahib' as
a symbolic protest. All gurdwara complexes have the 'Nishan Sahib,' a Sikh
religious symbol.
Farm
organisations accused Sidhu of trying to discredit their activism at the time,
calling him a "traitor." He had slammed farm leaders for allegedly
propagating anti-farmer misinformation and hostility. Sidhu was also a close
ally of BJP MP Sunny Deol, who ran in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the
Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab. During the election campaign, he stayed with
Deol. After joining the farmers' agitation, Deol, on the other hand, had
distanced himself from Sidhu.
