IN OUR SCHOOLS AND INSTITUTIONS, NO HIJAB OR SAFFRON SCARVES ARE PERMITTED, ACCORDING TO THE KARNATAKA MINORITY WELFARE DEPARTMENT

The Karnataka government has banned hijab, scarf, saffron shawls, and religious flags from classrooms in all institutions and colleges run by the state's Minority Welfare Department, stating that it will follow the High Court's interim judgement on the hijab issue. In a circular issued on Wednesday, Minority Welfare, Hajj and Wakf Department Secretary P Manivannan stated that the Karnataka High Court has given an interim order prohibiting students from wearing saffron shawls, scarves, hijab, or religious flags in the classroom until further orders.

"The High Court ruling applies to residential schools, colleges, and Maulana Azad Model English Medium institutions that are part of the Minority Welfare Department," he added in the circular. "In light of this, wearing a saffron shawl, scarf, hijab, or any other religious flag is prohibited in the department's schools and colleges, as well as Maulana Azad Model English Medium schools." The directive came a day after state Higher Education Minister C N Ashwathnarayan stated the High Court's interim decision didn't apply to degree college students.

B C Nagesh, the state's primary and secondary education minister, said on Thursday that all schools were operating normally and that just two or three institutions had reported incidences of female students being denied admission to campuses due to their hijab. On Thursday, however, multiple such events outside of schools and institutions were reported around the state.

Police allegedly urged hijab-wearing students outside Mandya PES College to disperse or face arrest for breaking prohibitory orders issued under CrPC Section 144. The students were protesting their refusal of admission, claiming that the Minister of Higher Education had stated that there was no uniform for degree colleges. A parent got into a confrontation with the principal at Chikkamagaluru Government PU College over non-entry, who said he was merely obeying court orders.

Students in Hassan got into a fight with the cops while staging a protest against being denied admission to college because of their hijab. Protests were also reported in Ballari and Kodagu, among other places. Some protesting youngsters were taken into prison by the police in Belagavi district as a precaution. Students in Shivamogga who sought to be let inside the campus were told to take online lessons instead.
