INDIA TELLS THE UN ON THE UKRAINE TENSION, "CAN'T AFFORD MILITARY ESCALATION."

New Delhi, India: India today expressed grave concern about the escalation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. India stated at a United Nations Security Council emergency meeting that de-escalation of the Russia-Ukraine situation should be the top priority.

"We must give due consideration to recent moves by parties seeking to reduce tensions. We applaud the concerted efforts being made in this regard, especially through the Trilateral Contact Group and the Normandy model. Parties must make more attempts to reconcile competing interests. A military escalation is not something we can afford "India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, TS Tirumurti, warned at a UN Security Council meeting.

"The escalation of tensions along Ukraine's border with the Russian Federation is deeply concerning. These changes have the potential to jeopardise the region's peace and security "Mr. Tirumurti continued.

After Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised the independence of two separatist territories in eastern Ukraine, the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting today.

India also stated that civilians' safety and security were a priority for it.

"Civilians' safety and security are critical. Over 20,000 Indian students and nationalities live and study in Ukraine, including in the country's border districts. We place a high importance on the welfare of Indians "Mr. Tirumurti expressed his thoughts.

India has advised all parties to step up diplomatic efforts to seek an acceptable solution as soon as possible.

"In conclusion, we underscore the critical need for all parties to safeguard world peace and security by showing extreme patience and stepping up diplomatic efforts to find a mutually agreeable settlement as soon as possible," Mr Tirumurti said.
