PATNA: NEW 5-YEAR JAIL SENTENCE, 60-LAKH FINE FOR LALU YADAV
Patna:
In a fifth case related to the fodder scam, Lalu Yadav was convicted today to
five years in prison and a fine of Rs 60 lakh. Last Monday, the Rashtriya
Janata Dal (RJD) leader was found guilty in the case. The case concerns the
illicit removal of Rs 139.5 crore from the Doranda treasury as part of the
fodder scandal that occurred during Lalu Yadav's tenure as Chief Minister of
Bihar in the 1990s.
Along
with 39 others, the three-time Chief Minister was found guilty.
"I
oppose those who seek to divide people. They know they won't be able to defeat
us, so they try to entrap us in conspiracies. I've never been terrified or
bowed down in front of anyone. I'm going to keep battling. The sufferings of a
fighter will never be understood by a coward "Lalu Yadav tweeted in Hindi.
Lalu Yadav, who is on bail and ill, was able to attend the court session via
video conferencing.
The
73-year-old commander was transported to the Ranchi jail hospital on February
15 after being condemned. He could be released shortly after serving more than three
and a half years in prison.
Another
case involving the fodder fraud is currently pending in the CBI court in Patna.
The issue involves an unauthorised withdrawal of funds from the Bank of
Bhagalpur's treasury.
The
950-crore fodder scandal involves widespread corruption, with monies intended
for animal feed embezzled from a number of government treasuries across Bihar.
To aid the scheme, the Animal Husbandry Department allegedly produced bogus
bills.
When
asked about Lalu Yadav's punishment, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar
distanced himself from the situation. "They also came to me after the case
was filed. Some of the people who filed lawsuits are still with him today
"Nitish Kumar stated that he will not be a petitioner.
In
four cases, Lalu Yadav has disputed his conviction.
Lalu
Yadav has been in prison since December 2017, serving the majority of his
sentence at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Jharkhand. After his
health deteriorated, he was flown to Delhi in January of last year.
"We
had a mandate to rule in Bihar in 2020, but they (BJP and Nitish Kumar) came in
through the backdoor and took power. Over and over, the same person gets
hounded "Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu Yadav's son and RJD MLA, is considered his
political heir.
