THE COURT FOUND LALU PRASAD GUILTY IN THE FIFTH FODDER SCAM CASE
Jharkhand:
A special CBI court in Ranchi, Jharkhand, found RJD chief and former Bihar
Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav guilty of illegally withdrawing 139.35 crore
from the Doranda treasury.
Lalu
Yadav was present in the courtroom Tuesday morning as Judge CK Shashi read out
the verdict in all five fodder scam cases in which he was implicated as a
conspirator.
There
were also 98 other defendants present, 24 of whom were acquitted.
Former
MP Jagdish Sharma and former Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman Dhruv
Bhagat were among the 35 people convicted to three years in prison. As a
result, they are eligible to apply for bail.
Lalu
Yadav and the other 39 people found guilty will be sentenced on February 21.
"We
have submitted an application requesting that he (Lalu Yadav) be transferred to
RIMS (Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi) due to his bad
condition. At 2:00 p.m., the court will hear the application "Prabhat Kumar,
the RJD chief's counsel, was quoted by news agency ANI.
Lalu
Yadav had already been convicted in four other cases involving the infamous 950
crore fodder scandal, including illicit withdrawals of 37.7 crore and 33.13
crore from the Chaibasa treasury, 89.27 crore from the Deoghar treasury, and
3.76 crore from the Dumka treasury.
He
was also fined Rs. 60 lakh for his conviction in the Dumka case.
He
has contested all four of his previous convictions, and he will very certainly
challenge this one as well.
All
of the cases involve the misappropriation of government cash intended for cow
feed.
He's
been sentenced to 14 years in prison so far, but he's out on bail for the four
convicted cases; the most recent (the Dumka treasury case) was in April of last
year. The lawsuit concerns funds taken by the Animal Husbandry Department of
Bihar between 1991 and 1996, when Lalu Yadav was the Chief Minister.
As
part of his sentence, he spent more than 3.5 years in judicial custody.
The
73-year-old has been in prison since December 2017 and has spent the majority
of his time there at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences. After his
health deteriorated, he was flown to Delhi in January of last year.
Lalu
Yadav, on the other hand, will have to return to prison if he receives a term
of more than three years in this case.
His
son Tejashwi Yadav led the RJD in his absence, and is credited for the party's
excellent showing in the 2020 Bihar election; it was the first time Lalu Yadav
had missed a state election campaign in 40 years.
His
absence, on the other hand, has not resulted in him surrendering command of the
RJD.
Despite
his legal and physical issues, he stated last week that he had no such plans
and that his son, Tejashwi Yadav, would have to wait to succeed him as party
leader.
Tejashwi
Yadav is now the Bihar Assembly's Leader of the Opposition.
