THE SUPREME COURT HAS REFUSED TO POSTPONE GATE 2022, AND THE TESTS WILL BE HELD ON TIME.
The
Supreme Court rejected to postpone this year's Graduate Aptitude Test in
Engineering (GATE 2022) exams due to the third wave of the coronavirus disease
(Covid-19), citing the risk of "chaos and confusion" among students
if the exams were delayed.
GATE
is a test that assesses a student's overall mastery of numerous undergraduate
engineering and scientific disciplines in preparation for entrance to a
master's program and employment by some government agencies.
The
GATE 2022 tests will now be held physically on February 5, 6, 12, and 13 as
scheduled, thanks to a green light from the Supreme Court.
In
light of the current Covid-19 rise, 11 GATE candidates petitioned the Supreme
Court, urging it to issue directives to the national government and the Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur (the organisers of GATE 2022) to
postpone the exams. "With the current third wave, Covid-19 has spread
widely in various states and cities thanks to its new variation Omicron.
Several studies, including one conducted by IIT Kanpur, estimate that the 3rd
wave will peak in early February and conclude in April. As a result, the peak
is most likely to coincide with GATE exam dates," according to the
petition.
"If
the exam dates are not postponed, candidates taking the GATE 2022 exam run the
risk of becoming infected and spreading it, posing a threat to their lives as
well as the lives of their family members," it continued. However, a bench
of the Supreme Court, led by Justice DY Chandrachud, warned the petitioners
today that the exams are a government policy matter, and that any court
intervention at this point would simply cause "chaos and uncertainty"
among students.
The
court stated that the first and second Covid-19 waves were not the same as the
third, and that in recent years, as many as 20 government tests had to be postponed
in a similar fashion. According to extracts reported by Bar and Bench, the
court stated, "We cannot start postponing tests like this."
"Everything is opening up now, and we can't fool around with students'
careers like this." A coaching centre is one of the petitioners. This is
an issue of academic policy."
While
lakhs of students around the country have been studying for the tests, only
20,000 candidates have signed an online petition asking for the exam to be
postponed, according to the Supreme Court. As a result, in order to avoid
confusion and uncertainty among the remaining students, the Supreme Court has
decided to dismiss the petition for a postponement of the GATE 2022 exams.
