HISTORY REPEAT: KYIV'S BABYN YAR BOMBED 81 YEARS AFTER THE JEWISH MASSACRE DURING WORLD WAR II
On
Tuesday, an apparent Russian airstrike struck Kyiv's main television tower in
the heart of the Ukrainian capital, knocking out some state broadcasting but
leaving the structure intact. The attack claimed the lives of five people.
According
to Ukrainian authorities, the attack on the television tower also hit the Babyn
Yar Holocaust memorial in Kyiv. According to a memorial spokesperson, a
security team has been dispatched to the site to assess the damage.
The
Babyn Yar memorial stands on the site of a mass grave where more than 33,000
Jews were slaughtered during Nazi occupation of the city in 1941. German troops
and local collaborators carried out the massacre.
In
response to the attack, Ukraine's President Zelenskyy tweeted on Tuesday,
"To the rest of the world: what is the point of saying "never
again" for 80 years if the rest of the world remains silent when a bomb is
dropped on the same site as Babyn Yar? At least 5 people were killed. History
is repeating itself."
