LIVE UPDATES FROM THE UKRAINE-RUSSIA WAR: THE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS WORSENS AS ATTACKS CONTINUE
Ukraine
and Russia made cautious progress in negotiations Monday but failed to achieve
a compromise on building "humanitarian corridors" between pummelled
cities, as the bloodshed from Moscow's assault escalated.
The
third round of negotiations, which focused on providing people with evacuation
routes from encircled towns, yielded "good outcomes," according to
Kyiv, while Russia stated its expectations from the talks were "not
met."
Subject
to Ukraine's consent, Russia said it would establish humanitarian routes on
Tuesday at 0700 GMT. Ukraine has already rejected a Russian plan for humanitarian
corridors connecting Kharkiv, Kyiv, Mariupol, and Sumy, citing the fact that
many of the routes ran directly to Russia or its ally Belarus.
Russian
President Vladimir Putin stated that he is not sending conscripts or reservists
to participate, and that the conflict in Ukraine is being led by
"professional" forces with "defined aims."
President
Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine reiterated his call for the West to boycott
Russian exports, particularly oil, and impose a no-fly zone to stop the
carnage.
Since
Russia's full-scale invasion on February 24, more than 1.7 million people have
fled Ukraine.
