OPEN LETTER FROM UKRAINE'S FIRST LADY: "EIGHT-YEAR-OLD ALICE... DIED ON THE STREETS"
Ukraine's
capital, Kiev: In an open letter to the world media on the Russian invasion,
Ukraine's First Lady, Olena Zelenska, decried the Kremlin's "mass
murder" of civilians, especially children.
Zelenska
stated emphatically that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is
"unacceptable." "It was difficult to believe.
"We
all awoke on February 24th to the declaration of a Russian invasion," she
wrote.
"Tanks
crossed the Ukrainian border, planes flew over our skies, and missile launchers
encircled our cities."
Despite
assurances from Kremlin-backed propaganda sources that this is a "special
operation," the mass slaughter of Ukrainian citizens is taking
place."
She
called the deaths of children "probably the most horrific and
devastating," citing several of the victims.
"Eight-year-old
Alice... perished when her grandfather tried to protect her on the streets of
Okhtyrka," she claimed. "Polina from Kyiv... perished together with
her parents in the bombardment."
"14-year-old
Arseniy was struck in the head by debris and could not be saved since an
ambulance could not get to him in time due to the tremendous fires," she
continued.
"I
shout out the names of these deceased children first when Russia insists it
isn't committing war against civilians," she stated.
'Close our skies,'
they say.
President
Volodymyr Zelensky has been praised for his wartime speeches, and Zelenska's
humour production firm has a writing background.
Her
speech focused on the suffering of civilians, since millions of people had fled
their homes to avoid the Russian military attack.
"This
war is being waged against civilians, not merely by shelling," she stated
emphatically.
"Refugees
are flooding our roadways," she remarked.
"Look
into the eyes of these tired women and children who are carrying the agony and heartbreak
of having to leave loved ones and life as they knew it behind."
She
mentioned difficulties in obtaining necessary medical treatment.
"Is
injecting insulin in the basement a simple task? Or to obtain asthma medication
while under fire? "she enquired.
"Not
to mention the thousands of cancer patients whose life-saving chemotherapy and
radiation treatments have been postponed indefinitely."
"Those
in charge must close our skies," she said. A no-fly zone has been ruled
out by NATO.
Zelenska,
44, is married to a former comedian and has two children.
She
pioneered a push for improved school lunches and has joined Zelensky on
overseas tours, including a meeting with Prince William and his wife Catherine
in the United Kingdom in 2020.
A
inquiry about whether Zelenska is now in Kyiv was not quickly answered by the
Ukrainian presidency.
