MICROSOFT'S SATYA NADELLA AND GOOGLE'S SUNDAR PICHAI GET PADMA AWARDS.

New Delhi, India: This year's Padma Bhushan recipients include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

After the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan is India's third highest civilian award.

Art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service are among the categories for which the Padma accolades are bestowed.

Mr. Nadella, 54, and Mr. Pichai, 49, are Indian-American corporate executives who have been recognised for their contributions in the "trade and industry" area.

General Bipin Rawat, India's first Chief of Defence Staff, was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. He died in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu last month with his wife and 12 others.

Cyrus Poonawalla of the Serum Institute of India and Krishna Ella and Suchitra Ella of Bharat Biotech have been awarded the Padma Bhushan. The vaccinations created by the two companies, Covishield and Covaxin, gave the country a much-needed boost in the fight against the pandemic.

One hundred and seven people have been awarded the Padma Shri, including musician Sonu Nigam and Olympian gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. The fourth-highest civilian award is the Padma Sri.

In keeping with annual custom, the government announced the honorees' names a day before the Republic Day celebrations.
