MICROSOFT'S SATYA NADELLA AND GOOGLE'S SUNDAR PICHAI GET PADMA AWARDS.
New Delhi, India: This
year's Padma Bhushan recipients include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google
CEO Sundar Pichai.
After the Bharat Ratna
and Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan is India's third highest civilian award.
Art, social work,
public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine,
literature and education, sports, and civil service are among the categories
for which the Padma accolades are bestowed.
Mr. Nadella, 54, and
Mr. Pichai, 49, are Indian-American corporate executives who have been
recognised for their contributions in the "trade and industry" area.
General Bipin Rawat,
India's first Chief of Defence Staff, was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. He died
in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu last month with his wife and 12 others.
Cyrus Poonawalla of
the Serum Institute of India and Krishna Ella and Suchitra Ella of Bharat
Biotech have been awarded the Padma Bhushan. The vaccinations created by the
two companies, Covishield and Covaxin, gave the country a much-needed boost in
the fight against the pandemic.
One hundred and seven
people have been awarded the Padma Shri, including musician Sonu Nigam and
Olympian gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. The fourth-highest civilian award is the
Padma Sri.
In keeping with annual
custom, the government announced the honorees' names a day before the Republic
Day celebrations.
