PAKISTAN'S SUPREME COURT HAS APPOINTED ITS FIRST FEMALE JUDGE.

Pakistan's first female Supreme Court judge was appointed on Monday, following an exceptionally difficult nomination procedure.

A commission that decides on the advancement of judges nominated Justice Ayesha Malik, 55. She was sworn in on live television, as is customary for Supreme Court judges, with Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmad administering the oath.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Imran Khan congratulated Justice Ayesha Malik on becoming the Supreme Court's first female justice. "She is in my thoughts and prayers."

Her elevation was initially denied by the nine-member body that confirmed her appointment last year, before voting 5-4 to approve her this year.

Some legal organisations criticised her appointment, claiming that she was chosen despite not being among the top three most senior justices on the lower court from which she was elevated. They have demanded that judges be promoted based on objective standards.
