5 REASONS FOR INDIA'S CAREFUL APPROACH TO UKRAINE
New
Delhi, India: For the second time in a week, India refrained on a UN resolution
related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. India refrained against a UN Security
Council resolution calling for a rare special emergency session of the UN
General Assembly to address Russia's actions towards Ukraine on Sunday.
New
Delhi also praised Moscow and Kyiv for agreeing to hold talks on the Belarus
border.
India
abstained on a UN Security Council resolution condemning Russia's aggression on
Friday night, stating that conversation is the only way to resolve differences
and expressing "regret" that diplomacy was abandoned.
So
far, India has refrained from condemning the Russian invasion directly. Why is
India taking such a cautious approach to Ukraine?
Here
are five of them:
•
The Ukraine crisis has put India on a tightrope, putting it under pressure from
both "old friend Russia" and "new friends in the West."
•
Russia is India's largest provider of defence weapons, having furnished the
country with a ballistic missile submarine.
•
India has 272 Russian-made Su-30 fighter fighters. It possesses eight kilo
class submarines built by Russia and around 1,300 Russian T-90 tanks.
•
Despite US pressure, India has decided to purchase Russia's most advanced
long-range surface-to-air missile system, the S-400 air defence system. In
2018, India and Russia agreed to buy the missile system for $5 billion.
Officials say Russia has also supported India in the UN Security Council on all
matters.
The
United States has also increased its pressure on India to commit to a more
robust response to Russia.
Speaking
to Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday, US Secretary of State Anthony
Blinken emphasised the significance of a "strong collective reaction"
to denounce Russia's "premeditated, unprovoked, and unjustified attack on
Ukraine."
In
the areas of defence, trade, and technology, the United States has remained an
important partner for India.
In
the tensions with China, America has also been a major supporter of New Delhi.
At the United Nations, France has also been a significant ally of India.
India
also has strong people-to-people links with the United States and Europe, as
well as a large number of Indians living in these countries.
