THE SITUATION BETWEEN RUSSIA AND UKRAINE:
At
least 7 people have been killed and 9 others have been injured as a result of
russian bombardment, according to ukraine. According to an IFX news agency
report, the Russian defence ministry stated that Ukraine's air bases and
military infrastructure have been neutralised. Meanwhile, according to Reuters,
Ukraine's military stated five Russian jets and a Russian chopper were shot
down in the Luhansk region.
Early
Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military campaign in
Ukraine. Large explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and other parts of
Ukraine as Putin spoke. Later, in Kyiv, air sirens sounded, signifying that the
city was under attack. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced martial law in
Ukraine, claiming that Russia had launched missile strikes against Ukrainian
infrastructure and border guards.
Putin's
move comes just hours after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Russia
will invade Ukraine in a matter of hours. Separatists had requested the Kremlin
for assistance in repelling Ukrainian "aggression" earlier, as
explosions rocked the breakaway eastern city of Donetsk. Russian military
columns have been deployed at the Russia-Ukraine border for days. Tensions had
risen after Putin declared two Ukrainian separatist regions autonomous and
ordered the deployment of "peacekeepers."
Why is Ukraine
important to Russia?
Russian
assault on Ukraine's border has sparked one of Europe's worst security crises
since the Cold War. Russia annexed Crimea, Ukraine's most significant port
region, in 2014. Conflicts between the two military continue to this day, but
the latest deployment of 100,000 Russian troops along the border has heightened
tensions to never-before-seen heights.
Moscow
has rejected plans for a military involvement, but it has supplied NATO with a
list of security demands, including the exclusion of Ukraine and other former
Soviet republics from membership. In addition, Russia has requested that NATO
cease military operations in Eastern Europe, which would necessitate the
withdrawal of combat units from Poland and the Baltic nations. Simply put,
Russia wants NATO to re-establish its pre-1997 borders.
