BHAGWANT MANN AND "RANG DE BASANTI" AT BHAGAT SINGH'S VILLAGE
The
village of independence fighter Bhagat Singh was drenched in the colour
"Basanti (yellow)" this morning for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader
Bhagwant Mann's oath ceremony as Punjab Chief Minister.
Yellow
turbans, which have become synonymous with comedian-turned-politician Bhagwant
Mann, flooded the village of Khatkar Kalan in response to his request that
residents wear "Basanti turbans and dupattas" to his swearing. The
colour yellow was used throughout the venue and decor.
Bhagat
Singh was known for wearing red turbans, which came to symbolise revolution.
In
a video message inviting the people of Punjab to his swearing-in, Bhagwant Mann
remarked, "We will colour Khatar Kalan in 'Basanti rang."
Mr
Mann, 48, will become the state's youngest Chief Minister since the 1970s.
Mr
Mann, whose AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal refers to as "his younger brother."
In
Punjab, the AAP secured a huge victory, taking 92 of the 117 seats in the
Punjab Assembly and decimating the ruling Congress. In the Dhuri assembly
constituency in Sangrur district, Mr Mann received approximately 60,000 votes.
Mr
Mann stated that three crore people would join him in taking the oath.
"Not
only will Bhagwant Mann take the oath and become Chief Minister at Bhagat
Singh's Khatkar Kalan on March 16, but so will all three crore people of
Punjab. We shall make Shaheed Bhagat Singh's Rangla Punjab together "In a
video message, Mr Mann stated.
Raghav
Chaddha, the leader of the AAP, was one of the first to post a photo of himself
sporting a yellow turban.
Mr
Mann announced his resignation as a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament yesterday.
He
told reporters that he was confident in his new role as Punjab's governor.
"We understand how to run a government. For the past seven years, I've
been a member of the Lok Sabha. Our government in Delhi has been re-elected by
the people. We've done it before "he stated
"Many
established politicians have lost elections, while newcomers have triumphed. I
am confident that fresh ideas will emerge in the state. This administration
will employ unconventional thinking "Added he.
Top
Congress leaders lost the election in Punjab, including outgoing Chairman
Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, and
previous Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.
Over
three lakh people are expected to attend the inauguration. Security has been
meticulously planned, with approximately 10,000 security personnel stationed in
the village.
Because
of the massive snowstorm, the district's schools are closed today.
