HARBHAJAN, RAGHAV CHADHA, AND LPU FOUNDER ASHOK MITTAL ARE AMONG THE AAP'S FIVE PICKS FOR RAJYA SABHA.
Former
cricketer Harbhajan Singh, IIT Delhi associate professor Sandeep Pathak, Delhi
MLA Raghav Chadha, Lovely Professional University (LPU) founder and chancellor
Ashok Mittal, and industrialist Sanjeev Arora have been named as the Aam Aadmi
Party's (AAP) representatives in the Rajya Sabha, according to party officials.
The
party nominees were led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to the Vidhan Sabha
secretariat to register their nominations.
The
AAP was given the opportunity to nominate five members to the Upper House after
gaining 92 seats in the Punjab Assembly elections. The tenure of five MPs from
Punjab have either finished or will end soon. The deadline for nominations is
Monday, and the elections will take place on March 31.
Chadha,
33, will be the youngest member of the Rajya Sabha. He was the party's
in-charge in Punjab and spent the majority of his time in the state over the
previous several months. He was an MLA from Delhi's Rajinder Nagar. He is also
the national spokesperson for the AAP.
Pathak
has been a part of the AAP for a few years, but has generally stayed out of the
spotlight. According to party sources, he played a key role in developing the
polling strategy.
According
to party sources, while the names of Harbhajan Singh, Chadha, and Pathak were
finalised last week, vigorous deliberations about the remaining two names
lasted until late Monday morning.
Arora
is from Ludhiana, while Harbhajan Singh and Mittal are from Jalandhar. Despite
the fact that the Congress approached Harbhajan before of the Punjab Vidhan
Sabha elections, sources close to the former cricketer indicated he was
uninterested in Assembly politics.
Five
Rajya Sabha seats from Punjab will be vacant by April 9. Partap Bajwa and
Shamsher Dullo of the Congress, Shwait Malik of the BJP, SAD (Sanyukt) chairman
Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, and SAD's Naresh Gujral are the outgoing MPs.
