Live updates from the Russia-Ukraine conflict: Ukraine sees potential for compromise; an official claims Russian troops have kidnapped 500 people.
Russia
Ukraine War Crisis Live: Ukraine said Tuesday that it sees potential for
compromise in talks with Russia, but Russian soldiers increased their
bombardment of Kyiv, and an estimated 20,000 residents escaped the encircled
port city of Mariupol via a humanitarian corridor. During another assault on
Mariupol late Tuesday, Russian troops captured a hospital and kidnapped roughly
500 people, according to regional commander Pavlo Kyrylenko.
On
the 20th day of Russia's invasion, fast-moving developments on the diplomatic
front and on the ground occurred.
Meanwhile,
the White House stated that India's acceptance of Russia's discounted crude oil
offer would not constitute a violation of US sanctions. White House Press
Secretary Jen Psaki, on the other hand, advised reporters to "consider
where you want to stand when history books are written at this point in time."
India has expressed its opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. New Delhi
has repeatedly urged all parties involved to work out their concerns through
discussion. It has, however, voted against Russia in all UN Security Council
decisions.
In
a joint letter to US lawmakers, US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelenskyy will virtually address the US Congress on Wednesday at 9 a.m. (1300
GMT).
"The
Congress remains unwavering in our commitment to supporting Ukraine as it
confronts Putin's cruel and diabolical aggression, as well as passing
legislation to cripple and isolate Russia's economy while also providing
humanitarian, security, and economic assistance to Ukraine," they wrote on
Monday.
Meanwhile,
the UN Secretary-General has warned that Russia's war on Ukraine is wielding a
"sword of Damocles" over the world economy, particularly for poor
developing countries, which are experiencing increasing food, petrol, and
fertiliser prices and are now seeing their breadbasket "bombed."
According
to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, 45 African and least developed
nations purchase at least one-third of their wheat from Ukraine and Russia,
with 18 importing at least 50%.
In
other matters, President Vladimir Putin spoke with Israeli Prime Minister
Naftali Bennett on the phone again on Ukraine, according to the Kremlin.
Bennett told Putin about his meetings with other leaders of state, while Putin
used video conversations to relay his impressions of negotiations between
Russian and Ukrainian officials, according to the Kremlin.
Bennett's
meeting with Putin lasted 90 minutes, according to a senior Israeli official,
with the focus on cease-fire talks and humanitarian considerations. To discuss
diplomatic concerns, the official spoke on the condition of anonymity.
