CHINA REPORTS 20,000 COVID CASES PER DAY, THE HIGHEST NUMBER SINCE THE START OF THE PANDEMIC.
China recorded over 20,000 Covid-19 cases on
Wednesday, the biggest daily figure since the epidemic began, with Shanghai,
despite being under lockdown, as the epicentre of the virus outbreak.
As
the number of cases rises, the country's "zero-Covid" plan is under
severe strain.
Until
March, China had kept everyday instances to a minimum by enforcing localised
lockdowns, mass testing, and severe international travel restrictions.
In
recent weeks, however, the caseload has swelled to thousands each day, with officials
claiming to have discovered a mutation of the highly transmissible Omicron
variety near Shanghai.
The
National Health Commission stated in a statement that China had reported 20,472
infections on Wednesday, with "no new deaths."
Even
during the peak of the initial outbreak, which was centred around Wuhan,
authorities reported the country's highest-ever daily infection number.
However,
the vast majority of patients are asymptomatic.
Despite
this, quarantine facilities in Shanghai are overflowing with people who have
tested positive for the virus, as local officials adhere to strict viral
standards.
Separating
Covid-positive babies and children from their parents who test negative is one
of them, a policy that has caused worry and pain among worried families.
Shanghai,
China's largest metropolis, accounting for more than 80% of the national total,
according to city officials.
Last
week, the 25-million-strong metropolis shut down its citizens in stages,
resulting in scenes of panic buying and mass testing.
Shanghai's
financial powerhouse was "insufficiently prepared" for the epidemic,
according to a top official.
As
the lockdowns continue, locals are becoming increasingly frustrated with the
lack of fresh food and restricted movement, with state broadcaster CCTV stating
that the city will conduct a new round of tests on the whole population on
Wednesday.
China,
where the coronavirus was initially discovered in late 2019 in the central city
of Wuhan, is one of the last countries to take a zero-Covid strategy to the
epidemic.
As
companies close and millions of people are confined indoors, the outbreak has
taken on a more serious economic dimension, reducing analysts' growth
estimates.
